WHAT IS IIT?

IIT is a group of educational institute of india set up by the government to produce high quality scientists, engineers and technologists. in short these are colleges of engineering. IIT full form Indian Institute of Technology. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists sixteen institutes located at Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Mandi, Patna, Ropar and Varanasi.Each IIT is an autonomous institution, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration. The Union HRD Minister is the ex-officio Chairperson of IIT Council.

Eligibility criteria for IIT Course:

To be eligible for admissions to B.Tech and Dual degree programmes at IITs, candidates must have secured a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination. Admissions to the above courses at IITs is based on two engineering entrance exams and a joint counselling process.

Step 3: Joint Seat Allocation Authority ( JoSAA Counselling)

For admissions to M.Tech programmes, candidates need to have qualified Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering ( GATE). Bachelor degree holders in Engineering and those who are in the final year of such programmes will be able to apply for GATE.

Student Life in IIT:

All the IITs provide on-campus residential facilities to the students, research scholars and faculty. The students live in hostels (sometimes referred to as halls) throughout their stay in the IIT. Students in all IITs must choose among National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Sports Organisation (NSO) in their first years.All the IITs have sports grounds for basketball, cricket,hockey,volleyball, Lawn tennis, badminton, and athletics; and swimming pools for aquatic events. Usually the hostels also have their own sports grounds.
Moreover, an Inter IIT Sports Meet is organised annually where participants from all 23 IITs contest for the General Championship Trophy in 13 different sports.
